Welsh Assembly vows to fight on CAP reforms.

Elin Jones, Welsh Assembly Rural Affairs Minister, is in Brussels today to attend to the EU Council of Agriculture Ministers for talks on the European Commission's Common Agricultural Policy reform proposals.

Jones has pledged to 'fight her corner' in an attempt to get the best deal available for Welsh farmers, not least of all a smooth transition from a historically based Single Farm Payment to an area-based system.

"Under the CAP, the Single Payment Scheme provides some £280m annually in direct payments to Welsh farmers and I welcome the clear indication from the Commission that direct payments will remain central to the CAP from 2014," she said.  "But as with all matters with the CAP, it is important to fully understand the detail which is unlikely to be known until next summer."
