Sainsbury's plan to try to stabilise lamb price

Sainbury's plans to try to 'ring-fence' its lamb producers by setting up a dedicated supply scheme if it is to deliver price stability in the lamb sector.  Sainsburys has already set up a dairy development group (see our blog post 27 May). 

Agricultural technologist at Sainsbury's, Alice Swift, says that the dairy development group was set up three years ago and is held in high regard in the supermarket business.  She went on to say that the supermarket was aiming to increase its percentage of contracted lamb producers considerably in the next three to five years and would be working closely with some farmers in the next few months to draw up plans.

Ms Swift suggests that the supermarket needs a good connection with their lamb producers and wants to support them in the same way they support the dairy producers.
