My placement with Barbers Rural has been an eye-opening experience, offering invaluable insights into the diverse and interesting world of Rural Chartered Surveying. From working on the new Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) to engaging in Capital Grants (CG) and Farming Equipment & Technology Fund (FETF), my time here has solidified my appreciation for the vital role these schemes play in promoting sustainable farming practices whilst supporting our local farmers. Helping landowners navigate the complexities of these programs has shown the importance of balancing compliance with the practical agricultural needs of our clients.
Assisting with a wide variety of valuations, from bare land to large farm enterprises and livestock and machinery, has been another highlight of my year. Beyond the numbers, these valuations require a deep understanding of the economic and practical significance of business assets to farmers and each valuation is a delicate balance of technical knowledge and experience whilst appreciating the client’s need for our report.
Engaging in planning and estate agency work has perhaps been the most rewarding aspect of my placement year, whether assisting with advising on land diversification or rural development or negotiating a deal on the sale of some land. Getting an application passed or agreeing a deal certainly gives you a great sense of satisfaction!
In summary, my time with Barbers Rural has not only expanded my technical skills but also deepened my commitment to supporting the local rural economy. During the year, I have learnt more than I could have expected and feel very well-equipped for my final year at Harper Adams.
