European Commission to claw back £500m in misspent CAP money - £3.3m from UK.

The European Commission is to claw back £500m in misspent CAP money, including £3.3m from the UK.

The UK fine relates to late payments made for the 2005-2007 scheme years and covers a range of schemes including the single farm payment.  However a Defra spokeswoman said the fines had already been paid and would not impact on the current budget.

The NFU thought the Commission's news was 'disappointing'. Richard Wordsworth, NFU single payment scheme advisor, commented that 'the true picture of the cost of the delivery of the SPS is yet to be known as claims are still be finalised that date back to 2005 and there are still monies outstanding to some farmers'.
