The names, addresses, quota details, transaction reference numbers, and in some cases phone numbers, of every DairyCo levy-payer (totally approx 13,000 farmers) which were held on a laptop has been stolen when theives broke in to the car of DairyCo member of staff on June 9th.
The police have been alerted but the laptop has not been retrieved. The car was not parted at the DairyCo offices and it is thought that the theives were opportunisitc rather than targeting the company.
The levy-runded body, whose remit is to solve market failure, said it was 'extremely embarrassed' about the situation and has sent letters to dairy farmers apologising for the loss. The letter stressed that there was no personal or financial data on the computer which would enable the theives to defraud farmers.
