CLA Wales Chairman and Vale of Glamorgan farmer, John Homfray, is calling for better farmgate milk prices in a worrying Christmas message.
"When I was a child there were six dairy farms in our village, a number that was reduced to just one four years ago. Now there are none," he said.
“There is only one dairy farm in nearby Cowbridge with about 100 cows and the family has numerous other business interests, and wherever I go in Wales there appears to be no end to the depletion in dairy farming numbers.
“If this carries on I fear it will lead to virtual wipe-out, unless even medium sized farms can become more viable.
“Having looked at the economics it appears that the final retail price is woefully inadequate and probably a commodity loss leader for retailers.
“It is true that with only a 75p per litre retail price a farmgate price of 23p is not unreasonable, as the margins through the system are what you would expect.
“But 75p simply does not make sense for any part of the chain ─ and 23p barely covers on-farm production costs."
