The Badger Trust is demanding that the Welsh Assembly Government's public consultation on its revised proposals to cull badgers as part of its bovine TB eradication programme should be declared 'invalid'. The trust has drawn attention to a 'serious' mistake made in the 26,000 official 'awareness' leaflets delivered to homes in the West Wales target area.
A statement of information released by the Assembly Government on November 4th admitted that an 'error had occurred in the editing' of a sentence in the leaflet sent to homes in the key Intensive Action Area where it is proposed to kill several thousand badgers in an attempt to control bovine TB.
The sentence said that 'previous trials have shown that culling badgers can reduce TB in cattle, by as much as 50% in six months" but should have read "previous trials have shown that culling badgers can reduce TB in cattle. Culling can start to show a benefit in six months."
