FSA cutbacks will put small abattoirs out of business.

The Association for Indpendent Meat Suppliers are reported to have said that the proposals by the Food Standard Agency to charge abattoirs the full cost of meat hygiene inspections will put small to medium sized abattoirs out of business.  The Association says that the vital service provided by local abattoirs to farmers and the local food industry has been put in jeopardy by unrealistic FSA thinking.

The suggestion is that only large slaughterhouses, where meat inspection costs benefit from the economies of scale will be able to survive.

Noman Bagley, AIMS policy director said "If it gets its way the FSA will deprive the consumers it is supposed to put first of the opportunity to buy locally-sourced meat."
