Can social media help farmers reach consumers?

Social media has been one of the fastest growing movements on the internet since its inception with millions of people a day continuing to sign up.  Although many people use Facebook and Twitter as a way to keep in touch with friends and communicate with a large number of people, it is being used by farmers as a way of connecting with consumers, sharing knowledge and being part of a thriving community.

Facebook as 500 million users and Twitter has in excess of 100 million and each page is a window in to the world of the user. 

Tapping into this resource offers huge potentials for farmers and the agriculture industry as a whole and is being used increasingly to get business messages across and influence buying decisions.  It is also important in keeping up to date with groups who criticise the industry.

However, there are concerns that some businesses are creating a bad impression by having Twitter accounts but not using them.  There is a suggestion that by not keeping up to date with social media can create an impression of sloppiness and apathy - not a great advert for your business.
