British retailers announce new labelling initiative.

UK retailers have announced new guidelines that will ensure the accurate country of origin labelling of British meat and dairy products.

The new guidelines will apply to processed meat products, such as sausages, bacon and ham, and a wide range of dairy products including milk, fresh cream, cheese and butter.  Under the new guidelines the term 'British' can only be used in the major retailers for meat from animals born and reared in the UK and dairy products made from milk produced here.

It is hoped that the initiative will help address one of the biggest sources of frustration for UK farmers where the use of the term 'British' for products processed in the UK, but originating from animals born and reared in other countries, has been used.

Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrison’s, Co-operative Group (incorporating Somerfield), Marks and Spencer and Waitrose have all signed up to the new guidance.
