Beef markets remain strong.

Beef markets look set to remain strong for the foreseeable future as tight supplies continue to under prices thereby bucking the usual seasonal dip.

Auctioneers across the UK have reported very strong trade over recent weeks, with plenty of cattle breaking the 200p/kg liveweight mark.

Bernie Hutchinson, Managing Partner of Barbers Auctions in Market Drayton, said decent cattle achieved 200p/kg liveweight at Wednesday's sale, although lighter heifers were slightly cheaper at 170-180p/kg. The overall average was virtually unchanged on the week at 182-183p/kg, he said.

"A lot of cattle have been killed younger and lighter this year because trade has been so good all the way through. I don't think we'll have the usual glut of cattle come through pre-Christmas, so it'll be interesting to see how markets respond."
