1 in 4 farming families are living below the poverty line.

A report in the Farmers Guardian states that a quarter of farming households live below the official poverty line with an income of less than £20,000.  The report, by the Commission for Rural Communities, reveals the 'tremendous variety' in the financial stability of the nation's farming households.

The farmers facing the biggest struggles tend to inhabit upland farms with grazing livestock, while tenant farmers often experience 'specific barriers'.  Many are left 'trapped in poverty without the resources or support to earn a living wage', according to the report 'Poverty amongst farming households: achieving sustainable livelihood'.
