Young Farmers

The team at Barbers Rural are keen and active supporters of Market Drayton Young Farmers.  This is not only because we believe in the development of the next generation but because we believe it is a fantastic rural social network.  In fact Mike and Louise Taylor met through the Young Farmers group at Market Drayton some 25 years ago!

This year local farmer's daughter Samantha Roberts has taken over as Chairperson at Market Drayton and is keen to breathe new life into the ailing club.  They are appealing for new members so why not get in touch and go and find out what its all about.  It really is a great way to get to know people from all over the county and country but also to develop skills and learn new things.

Sam reports on the latest news from MD YFC

"It's been a busy few months for Market Drayton Young Farmers.  Highlights have included several meals out (all you can eat proved to be misleading), pub quizzes (thank God for our ability to quote the Yeo Valley advert by heart) and, of course, dances, balls and other general merriment.

One of the most popular events was to Buttercross farm and shop where we saw a butchery demonstation of a pig.  We made, and ate, our own sausages and had a talk on the business side of owning and running a farm shop.  We also attended a stock judging demonstration and had the chance to have a go ourselves - the MDYFC prize cattle will be making their way to a market near you soon!  Our then Chairman, Tim, took us along to his favourite haunt, the Newport Climbing Wall, where he attempted to teach us to 'boulder'.  Fortunately on that occasion there were no broken bones - although that wasn't for the want of trying!  (FYI - throwing yourself backwards off a 6 ft wall is not a good idea).

This year we are looking forward to restructuring the club.  Tim is sidestepping to the position of Treasurer, making way for me to take over as Chairman.  Plans so far include pub quizzes, more climbing (if we can brave it), a brewery visit and fund raising though a tradition muck mission (delivering manure for those who don't know), stalls at the Christmas markets (you will find us by the mulled wine) and RAG raids.  Add to this the usual regular trips to pubs, clubs and balls and you can see that we don't like to miss out on having a good time.

This year we will be meeting for a chat / drink on the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month at the Hinds Head in Norton-in-Hales at 7.30 pm.  You will find us in the conservatory near the back.  Do come along - there is no obligation to join and we will be truly pleased to meet you.

For information on our events or on joining MDYFC contact Samantha on 07894 954768 or marketdraytonyfc@yahoo.co.uk.

We are aimed at ages 16-26 and all are welcome - you don't have to be a farmer to join!"
