    Farmers in Scotland who include ineligible land in their single farm payment applications could find themselves automatically facing penalites, the Scottish government has warned.

    Under tightened Single Application Form rules, failure to make deductions for hard features such as roads, ponds and new buildings will be deemed as intentional, resulting in farmers being fined.

  • CLA says National Planning Policy Framework is 'better than expected'.

    The CLA has said the draft National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) published by the Government is 'better than expected' for rural areas.  However it went on to say that the framework still needs to support the need for a prosperous and 'broader' rural economy, with housing development across all rural settlements to enable people to both work and live in the countryside.

  • Farmers urged to consider malting barley.

    A report in the Farmers Guardian suggests that malting barley is a crop worth considering as there is talk of malting premiums of around £50/tonne over feed value for spring crops and £40 for winter crops.

    In Scotland, where the spring crop is targeted at the distilling industry, the potential premiums could be up to £60.

  • Badger cull - latest information.

    Defra have announced that they will now consult with stakeholders on the guidance to Natural England, which will issue badger cull licences.  This is necessary due to the fact that there have been a number of changes to the licence conditions from last year's proposals.

    The consultation will end in September and Defra Ministers will make a final decision in the autumn once the results have been analysed.

    Newport Show 2011 was a resounding success. As always the weather played a crucial part in everyone’s enjoyment, and in spite of several rain soaked days preceding the show the sun shone gloriously throughout Saturday. The sun shines on the righteous according to RWL Oakes the dapper show president 2011.

    Thank you to everyone who visited our stand and we hope you enjoyed a refreshing drink and some lunch with us.

  • Barbers Auctions Straw Auction 7th July 2011

    Barbers Auctions held their annual standing straw sale on Thursday 7th July. A packed saleroom at Market Draytion Livestock Market saw highly competitive bidding for 4000 acres of wheat, barley and oat straw to be baled after harvest.

    Barley Straw sold from £35 to £95 per acre and averaged £57.25

    Wheat Straw sold from £20 to £70 per acre and averaged £47.40.

    Oat Straw sold from £20 to £82 per acre and averaged £49.37...

  • Pig producers are revolting! (Well, protesting!)

    PIG producers are set to descend on Tesco’s AGM tomorrow (Friday, July 1) in protest at the low prices they claim are killing off the industry.

    Around 100 producers plan to leaflet investors at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham on Friday (July 1) calling on Britain’s biggest retailer to follow the likes of Waitrose, Morrisons and McDonalds in supporting producers.

  • Jim Paice says current badger policy is unacceptable.

    Farming Minister, Jim Paice, has insisted that maintaining the current policy is unacceptable, just days ahead of an expected announcement on a badger cull in England.

     

    Speaking in the House of Commons Mr Paice said that if no new measures are put in place to improve bTB control, the disease could cost the taxpayer £1 billion over the next decade.
