    Caroline Spelman, DEFRA secretary, has said that the government will keep a close eye on how retailers go about cutting prices for consumers.  The warning came after Tesco announced a Big Price Drop campaign with cuts across 3,000 products.

    The NFU has said it si concerned that the extent of the cuts will force Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons to follow suit, and it they do the costs must not be passed back to the farmers.

    NFU president Peter Kendall and Liberal Democrat MP Andrew George have clashed over Government plans for a badger cull in England.

    Mr George said the Lib Dems ‘don’t fully support’ the policy as they were ‘not convinced’ it is justified by the science and could be implemented as intended, despite assurances from the NFU that it would be done properly.

  • Meadow Foods increases milk price by 1.67ppl.

    According to the Farmers Guardian Chester based Meadow Foods is increasing its producer milk price from October 1st.

    All producers will benefit from the 1.67ppl says the company as it is not linked to any new quality or production targets.

    The increase will raise the Meadow Foods standard litre, for Cheshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Lancashire, North Wales and South Wales to 28.38ppl, and in Cumbria to 28.46ppl.

    The Farmers Weekly reports that First Milk is to increase the price paid to farmers from next month, following better market returns and further business efficiency savings.

    A report in the Farmers Weekly says that UK pig prices appear to have plateaued with no real sign of an immediate upturn.

    Although the GB Euro Deadweight Adjusted Pig Price for week ending 10 September 2011 dropped from 147p/kg to 146p/kg, weekly contract prices for the week ended 16 September remained stable to average 142.4p/kg, with spot bacon quotes generally between 140-144p/kg according to specification.

    The Campaign to Protect Rural England says that retailers should do more to support farmers by increasing the amount of local food they stock on their shelves.

    DEFRA has approved the UK’s first GM wheat trial, which will be conducted by the Rothamsted Research institute in 2012 and 2013.
